Palm Fatty Acid Distillate is a one of bulk palm oil products formed from the clarification process of crude palm oil. PFAD is formed during the processing of refining, Bleaching, and Deodorization of Crude Palm Oil as a beneficial by-product. Although classified as a by-product (production waste) of the process of filtering crude palm oil, PFAD contains a lot of palmitic acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid. With a lot of fatty acid content, PFAD can be a raw material for the synthesis of mono-diglycerides (MDAG).
Monoglycerides have a role as an emulsifier that can unite the two liquid phases. Emulsifiers are widely used in the food and non-food industries. Therefore, PFAD can be used as a raw material for the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. PFAD can be processed into calcium fat for ruminant food, vitamin E and magnesium stearate for pharmaceuticals, thermal stabilizer for PVC pipes, and additives for bioplastics.
