Since hydroponic systems have become popular for planting, coconut peat (Cocopeat) has also become popular as a good planting medium. Cocopeat is a natural fibre made out of coconut husks. The extraction of the coconut fibre from husks gives us this by-product called cocopeat. Based on the study, coconut peat (coco peat) is the best organic planting medium for hydroponics and the like.
Cocopeat is a multi purpose growing medium made out of coconut husk. The fibrous coconut husk is pre washed, machine dried, sieved and made free from sand and other contaminations such as animal and plant residue. This makes coco peat an excellent growing medium for hydrophonics or plant growing container, especially it has natural rooting hormones and anti-fungal properties.
And one of the advantages of using cocopeat is Coco peat generally has an acidity in the range of pH – 5.5 to 6.5. It is a little on the acidic side for some plants, but many popular plants can tolerate this pH range.. While peat particles are fairly solid and big early on, once they are treated and decomposed to a certain point, they are like sponges with micro-pores that hold water, away from the plant root but available to replenish the larger pores the plant root can access.
Coco peat can be re-used up to three times with little loss of yield. Coco peat from diseased plants should not be re-used. In addition to being the recommended planting medium for hydroponics systems, coco peat is also the best choice for: Potting mixes, Nursery & garden center professionals, Seedling nurseries, Lawn and golf courses, Horticulture and floriculture applications, Home gardening (indoor and outdoor), Worm bedding .
